Events

Model UN hosts several on-campus and off-campus events for the entire MIT community. Our organization has several General Body Meetings per year for students to learn more about Model UN and contribute their ideas and suggestions. We also coordinate simulations and lead training sessions for students to develop their skills in Model UN and to prepare for conferences.

Furthermore, Model UN brings prominent diplomats, professors, and other guests to speak to the MIT community. In the past, we've hosted several speakers including panel of five European Consul Generals, a lecture by Professor Noam Chomsky, and the director-general of the Taiwanese consulate in Boston.  Additionally, Model UN co-sponsors events with other MIT organizations.

On 24 October 1945, the United Nations was formally established after a majority of its founding members ratified a treaty setting up the world body. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution recommending that the day be observed as a public holiday by Member States. Traditionally, it has been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions and exhibits on the goals and achievements of the Organization.

This event is STRONGLY recommended for people without a lot of Model UN experience, and highly encouraged for everyone. We will be going over the basics of parliamentary procedure and running a mock committee simulation. Those of you with no experience will get to learn the terminology (What is the difference between a point and a motion? How can an amendment be unfriendly? When does a working paper become a resolution?), and those of you who already speak the language can hone your speaking, caucusing, and resolution-writing skills. We'll also be available to answer any questions you have about becoming a Class Representative. Food will be provided.
